Students are given the opportunity to study band instruments beginning in 5th grade. Lessons are provided on a weekly basis for 40 minutes on a rotating basis. Students attend their lesson with other students who play the same instrument. A full band experience
will also be provided. Participation is strongly encouraged by all of
the instructors.
Instructional Goals
Band instruction in the elementary school is intended to contribute to the achievement of the following goals:
1) To teach the basic technique necessary to play a band
instrument.
2) To promote self-discipline and develop problem solving habits.
3) To prepare for future participation in school and community groups.
4) To develop vocabulary of musical terms and demonstrate recognition
of musical concepts.
5) To foster aesthetic experiences as well as self-esteem and social
development.
6) To apply the fundamentals gained from classroom music to the
instrumental music program.
7) To enrich the students' appreciation and knowledge of music through
the performance medium.
8) To ensure that all instruction is related to the NJ Core Curriculum
Content Standards for Visual and Performing Arts.
